The LA Lakers Have Targeted Another Point Guard To Grab This Offseason
A recent report states that the Lakers plan to pursue Collin Sexton
With a new head coach in JJ Redick, the Los Angeles Lakers already have plans for the upcoming season. Considering the fact that D’Angelo Russell has exercised his player option and opted out of his contract, Los Angeles wasted no time looking for another guard.
On Monday, a report went viral via X that they intend to pursue Utah Jazz’s shooting guard Collin Sexton.
After his first year in Utah was riddled with injuries, Sexton is now coming off one of the best seasons he’s had in a while. This year, he logged in 26.6 minutes a game while averaging 18.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists. Along with power forward Lauri Markkanen, he was one of the most efficient shooters on the team, completing 48.7% of his field goals attempts and 39.4% of his 3-point attempts.
The Lakers would benefit in a large way if they get Sexton. This year, they were one of the best 3-point shooting teams with a completion percentage of 37.7% but Russell was the main contributor to that. Sexton would definitely fill that void with his ability to execute those catch-and-shoot opportunities when playing with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. He would also be able to get the Lakers points in transition as he averaged 4.8 transition points this season.
Lakers will have to enter trade talks with a plan
If the Lakers want to financially be able to acquire Sexton, they will have to be comfortable with sacrificing more than one asset.
One direction the Lakers could take in this situation is offering Gabe Vincent, Taurean Prince, Christian Wood and their 2024 second round draft pick. This trade would be advantageous to the Lakers as they will be shortening their depth at the forward position. Another way to make this work financially is trading Vincent, Wood, shooting guard Max Christie and rookie small forward Maxwell Lewis.
The offseason is just beginning so the Lakers will have plenty of time to make a decision.
