Dejounte Murray Would Fit Perfectly On The New York Knicks
Murray could offer both offense and defense to the Knicks
With a 17-13 record, the New York Knicks haven’t been involved in much trade discussions this season. But they are still willing to become active in the trade market.
On Dec. 22, it was revealed that they have expressed interest in Atlanta Hawks’ shooting Dejounte Murray.
He can’t be traded until Jan. 9 due to signing a four-year, $120 million dollar contract extension in July. However, when he does become available, he will still have a ton to offer.
The Hawks are being guided through the season by point guard Trae Young, who is logging in 28.1 points per game. But Murray has had his hands on things, as well. Right now, he is averaging 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.6 steals a contest.
The Knicks would have to release a great defensive asset
In order to acquire Murray, the Knicks may have to cut ties with small forward Josh Hart. Even though some might see that as an uneven trade, it’s one that could work out for both sides.
Right now, the Knicks are being led by the duo of Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle. With Brunson averaging 26.0 points and Randle 22.9 points per game, Murray will give the Knicks an additional scoring option. Although Murray can be streaky on offense, he can still put up above-average numbers.
His most unique trait is his defense. For his career, he averages 2.5 steals per 100 possessions and has a defensive rating of 111.0. He even has the accolades to show for it. He led the league in steals during the 2021-22 season and even made the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2018.
As for the Hawks, they would be receiving a player who could help their defensive woes. Right now, they have a defensive rating of 120.8, ranking them 27th in the league. Adding Hart to the mix will improve their defense, partciularly against ball-handlers. For the season, Hart averages 5.9 contested shots and 1.2 steals per 36 minutes.
With all factors considered, this would be a well-balanced trade.
